Family and Friends – Do you sense the emotion?

***************************************

Mornin’ Bustle

Sister’s in the kitchen
Flour from head to toe
Helping make biscuits
Kneadin’ the dough

Window’s open
Curtains flapping in the breeze
Mama wipes her brow
”Pass the milk, please”

Potatoes peeled and washed
Are set aside to drain
Thunder in the background
Quickly turns thoughts to rain

A poor man’s gravy becomes
A true Southern surprise
Country ham sizzlin’
Forming perfect red-eyes

Fresh eggs swiftly broken
Crackling in the skillet
Aroma quickly commands
“Come and get it!”

The table’s all set
Coffee steaming in the pot
Biscuits from the oven
Sat down while piping hot

Thank you, Lord, for daily bread
Country ham and bacon
Grandma’s jam and all the rest
Ready for the takin’!

AMEN!

Betwixt ‘n’ Between

The rocker creaks under Grandpa’s weight
Back and forth in rhymic motion
Synchronized with the sounds of the night

A transparent haze surrounds his face
As smoke is drawn and exhaled
Breathlessly from a bent Dublin pipe …

Tiny fingers pierce the small ringlets of smoke
Before they dissipate into the cool night air
As Grandpa’s sly grin turns slightly upward

The screen door opens with a ghostly resonance
Swinging outward onto the front porch
As Grandma sighs with a quiet step forward

Carefully gathering the skirt of her apron
She gently wipes dampness from her hands
Whilst a soft whisper falls on Granspa’s ear

The cycle of life has blessed us gloriously
We still manage to entertain our grandson
Even though telltale signs of aging are clear

Two small hands reach out for them both
Stroking the wrinkled skin and tight veins
We will grow old together
I’ll help the signs of aging disappear

the spirit should never grow old.”
