Does that mean the days of the United States Postal Service (USPS), a cherished American institution, might be numbered? While the Internet may be convenient, its functionality is dependent upon the mood of the cyber ghost on any given day.

Awakenings: Traditions with Papa!

November 12, 1916 – July 17, 1997

Yesterday we celebrated Veterans Day. Today, I continue that celebration with the birthday of my dad. Had he lived he would be 97 years old. He served in the Navy during WWII. He never talked about the war. It’s memories were private for him as is with so many of our veterans. The only tangibles I remember from his service were his uniforms, medals, and insignias. He kept them stored neatly away until right before he died. Mother told me one day very suddenly he gathered all that he had from his Navy days, walked into the backyard and set them ablaze. I suppose this was his way of finally letting go. It was only a short time later he went to bed one night and slipped into the final sleep.

God bless you, Papa. May you rest in peace!

Times were much different back in the day, some say better. Simpler maybe, but debatable whether actually better. Life was harsh without the amenities enjoyed today. One aspect that evolved, rather than being invented by one single individual, is television…the boob tube, idiot box, the tube, the telly, TV! By whatever name it is called one fact remains: The TV without a doubt has taken over the home since its inception.

Awakenings: Hail to the Cowboy and Westerns!

Few images of American history pose pure masculinity like the cowboy. His rugged, heroic bravery stood tall in the saddle as he headed across dangerous territory facing nature’s sprawling, treeless plains and humanity’s outlaws. He donned a cowboy hat, spurs, and boots proudly laced with both humility and a sense of arrogance.

It is feeling absolute pride, joy, exhilaration and emotional gratification for serving one’s country. It means extreme sacrifice for both self and family. It bears pain and anguish during times of separation. It means not knowing sometimes when you will be coming home or even if you will ever make it back home. It brings on happiness and tears at the birth of your child when you are not there to hold him or her for the first time. It recognizes the sufferings of family when shunned by others. It means…
