I think it was a big mistake calling it President’s Day rather than Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday. The holiday doesn’t mean as much now that it’s lost its identity. It really seems to have become all about discount automobiles and deparment store clearance sales. Kids don’t even know which presidents are being celebrated OR that it’s their sort of both birthdays.
That’s what I am talking about!
President’s day doesn’t mean a thing to me except all federal organizations get another day office. No banks, schools, or post office. Whoopie! Most employers certainly don’t give you the day off with pay. We need to combine President’s day with MLK and Groundhog day and be done with it.

I’m working & my kids are at school.
This should not be a free day off for anyone.
And – schools should take these types of days to educate the children on the history & meaning behind it.

Understood on both counts…but first and foremost our kids need to be educated!
Like Teepee, I prefrred celebrating Washington and Lincoln separately, especially sinc enot all our presidents deserve a holiday–especially while still alive. Then too, the kids willlearn more if that day is spent celebrating in school with plays and special things to do. In NY it is president’s week which is also spring break which was cancelled in cathlolic schools due to time lost with superstorm Sandy.
