A Tragic Loss: Sandra McLeod Humphrey

on November 28, 2012

Today’s posting at catnipoflife is a tribute in memory of Sandra McLeod Humphrey. I feel very honored to have known Sandra even if for only a short period of time. I encourage you to visit her website Dare to Dream Big! If you did not know Sandy, there would be no better way to celebrate her life than to acquaint yourself with her writing by visiting her blog @ http://www.kidscandoit.com/blog/. Then, I encourage all, whether you knew her or not, to order one of her books as a Christmas gift for a friend, loved one or family member. What a great tribute that would be for Sandy!

Here is a brief account of the tragic death of Sandra and her husband, as well as a little insight into her remarkable writing.

******************

“Tragedy has taken the life of award-winning children’s book author Sandra McLeod Humphrey and her husband, Brian Humphrey.  Both were killed in a house fire on November 23. The couple’s single-family home in Minnetonka, MN, was in flames at 10:30 p.m. Friday, according to news sources, including the Minneapolis/St. Paul TV network KARE 11. No official cause of the blaze has been released.”

Sandra is best known for her overwhelming desire, knowledge and talent for writing books to build strong character. She has written many award-winning books to help empower young people to believe in themselves and to make good choices. Although her books cover many different subjects and span different age groups, they all have one thing in common: they are written to get young people thinking and talking about important social and moral issues and to help them be the best they can be!

Sandra, you will be deeply missed but your dream lives on!

Beautiful tribute Sharla. I don’t think any of us can quite believe this and are walking around with a heavy heart today. Sandra would be pleased to know that one of her books is # 1 in Teen biographies on Amazon right now. Her words and compassion will live on for many years. A big hug! ~ Peggy

  7. Thank you, Raani, for doing this. This has been on my mind all day. I certainly hated to learn this about Sandy and her husband. Like so many others, I will miss emailing, and reading her blogs. It was just something about her that I so admired even from a distance, so what a powerful woman. I have three of her books (I purchased two and she gave me one).
Sandra will be missed, but her legacy lives on.

  8. Thank you, Sharla, for this lovely tribute to Sandy Humphrey. I came to know her through LinkedIn and benefited from her encouragement and enthusiasm. I look forward to reading her wonderful books to my granddaughter.

About a month ago, I won one of Sandy’s books and then ordered two for my granddaughters. She autographed them and the oldest was so cute as the first thing she read was the inscription. She did great reading the cursive handwriting since she is only 7. Now I have tears in my eyes…again!

  9. Sharla, Thank you for this beautiful tribute to a wonderful lady who not only talked the talk, but walked the walk. She will be missed.

I just read a comment on Goodreads.com that made me realize Sandy had been following my reviews years ago. I looked up her bio and saw that the fire had, as I thought, killed her and her husband in 2012. Sandy and I were good friends together at Hannah More Academy together in High School. I think we both were in calculated with good ethics there and a love of writing there.
