Each year, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 marking the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. This was during a time when protest was of the highest order, especially as war raged in Vietnam. Earth Day, however, did shift conscious awareness away from the war opposition and more toward environmental concerns.

The immediate aftermath of the first Earth Day celebration resulted in people looking hung over and litter-filled parks which partly negated the previous day’s environmental message.

Do you remember the very first Earth Day? I remember. It wasn’t main stream. It was part of our “rebellion” but it has actually become main stream and that’s nice. I think this is is probably our generation’s biggest contribution to society and the world, along with making blue jeans and running shoes high fashion!
Looking the way I look right now I guess I should remember the first day on earth!! *sigh*
I remember my relief and joy to find I wasn’;t the only one when I heard of a conference in England called Women for LIfe on Earth back in the seventies.
I think it’s a vital committment now that we’ve nearly destroyed so many aspects of the ocean, and the environment and the atmosphere…
