Awakenings: May Day

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Today is May 1st and is officially…

May Day

May Day has been celebrated for many centuries, and its origins date back to pre-Christian times. Today, May Day is celebrated throughout Europe and North America, and a public holiday often recognizes the day.

Traditional May Day activities include dancing around the maypole and the selection of the Queen of May/May Queen. A crowning will also take place of the Queen of May.

Morris dancing is another May Day tradition, and offers the perfect excuse to dress up in full Morris dancing gear. A sturdy stick will also be required, as Morris dancers striking each other’s sticks is just one aspect of this eccentric British tradition.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Featured article by Micki Peluso, author of …And the Whippoorwill Sang. Learn the origin of the month of May, events surrounding celebrations of May Day, ritualistic and symbolic fetes of olden days, when May Day celebrations flourished and the magical rites of May Day.

My! My! My! It’s Pie! Pie! Pie! Not just any pie but…

 National Blueberry Pie Day

Blueberries, or star berries as the Native Americans called them, are one of nature’s super foods. The humble blueberry is one of few blue foods, found in nature, and it is native to the Americas. The state of Maine is the larger producer of blueberries in the world with more than 60,000 acres being farmed. In the United States and Canada, harvesting season can run from early May in the warmer portions to the end of August in the northern-most area.

Awakenings: For the Love of Animals

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

They breathe. They have a heart. They have a soul. They know hunger. They feel pain. They love and know when they are loved. They do have a voice, just not of words. These are our animals. Some provide us with milk, eggs & meat for food, others offer wool & furs for warmth, many give us entertainment. All provide moments of joy. Those we are closest to become our pets…we pamper and adore. But, all are not so lucky…

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Within our society live humans who indulge, not in actions of love, but obtain pleasure in inflicting needless cruelty. Animals are starved and beaten with no remorse. Some survive remaining maimed for life. Too many die. Join the fight to end animal cruelty!

Awakenings: ‘Hooping’ Along

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

This Day in History: March 05, 1963

The Hula-Hoop, a waist-, limbs-, neck-swiveling toy, became a huge fad across America when it was first marketed by Wham-O in 1958. On this day in history, March 05, 1963, the Hula-Hoop is officially patented by the company’s co-founder, Arthur “Spud” Melin. An estimated 25 million Hula-Hoops were sold in its first four months of production alone.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Ah-h-h! I remember it well. It meant enjoying time outdoors, thus leaving household chores behind either completed or to be tended to later.
