Awakenings: The Brolly, Gamp or Bumbershoot

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

What are we celebrating today?

There are many items in existence whose names have changed (not to protect the innocent) from one century to the next. Such is the case for today’s celebration. If you are not familiar with the brolly, gamp or bumbershoot, what about the parapluie, rainshade or umbrolly? Another name is the sunshade (not to be confused with sun glasses), parasol and of course, the giveaway is the fact February 10th is . . .

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Have you ever heard of the Nubrella? Check it out…got my doubts!

Awakenings: Remembering the Challenger

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Today marks the day of a horrific tragedy for our nation. Like others before this time in different arenas, the atmosphere left many in the wake of death and destruction. Only this time it was not on this earth, but in space. America was in the height of the space age. Having placed man upon the moon decades earlier only set the stage for much more space exploration to come in the future.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Along with progress comes tragedy but that does not make the loss any easier. We can only learn from our losses in hopes of bettering the future. Today my thoughts and prayers are with the families whose loved ones perished as a result of this event.

Awakenings: Familiar sounds?…going, going, GONE!

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Sounds of the past are not limited just to music, which allows history to speak to us other than only through the written word. We live in a highly technological age where many items of the past have or will soon become obsolete. Each is identifiable by its unique sound for we live in a world of cacophony. Unless you are in a location to visit a museum many of these will never be ‘heard’ by you or your kids depending upon your age. Enjoy the memories or listen to sounds you have never heard! Better still if you have a child or grandchild at home, invite them in for a history lesson!

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

It is very possible these are sounds your kids have never heard and possibly will never hear unless you take the time to introduce them!

Awakenings: Why the Poinsettia?

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

During the Christmas season, it is not unusual to find thousands upon thousands of poinsettias displayed around the world. While the plants add significant beauty to the season, they are not limited just to the color red. Single poinsettias, double poinsettias, white poinsettias, pink poinsettias, variegated poinsettias, candy cane poinsettias and so many more don gardens, store shelves, greenhouses, churches and homes.

The symbolism of the poinsettia goes much deeper than simply adding color to Christmas time. Before delving into its history and spiritual meaning, let’s examine a bit of poinsettia trivia:

Did you know…

You must go to Awakenings to find out if you know!

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

As we look upon our decorations this year, may our visions serve as reminders of the real meaning why Christmas is declared a celebration.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Awakenings: Thanksgiving Greetings

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Enrich the Future...

Thanksgiving is a day of celebration not only for the blessings of today but for blessings to be extended into tomorrow’s tomorrows. Take a moment to count your blessings but most importantly ask yourself how you can bless someone else. Perhaps something as simple as a smile could brighten someone’s day. Whatever it is, take the time to bring blessings into the world around you, one moment, one day, one person at a time. The future is in your hands!

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Support our Troops: Support America!

May they be blessed this day, every day, and be reunited with loved ones in the days ahead.
