Awakenings: Oldies but Goodies & Then Some

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Today in Music History: April 21

Music of today, as well as tomorrow, reaches deep into the heart and soul of all yesterdays. Events of the past beget memories that set the stage for the tomorrows to come. Life void of those memories leaves nothing but emptiness, thereby a world without music. There is always a story behind the music. Harmony in life is wielded through various genres of music from rap to contemporary to classic to rock to gospel and everything in between, before and after.

Embrace the Past…

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

From the 50s to the 90s, enjoy the music memories!

Awakenings: Titanic – Day 5: Tragedy Strikes

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

The unthinkable happened. The unimaginable occurred. At 2:20 am (2 hrs 40 mins after striking the iceberg), the ocean vessel once deemed unsinkable leaves around 1,517 souls in the depths of her final wake. The water in the area in which Titanic sank was lethally cold, a temperature of 28 °F (−2 °C). A human body will perish in fifteen minutes or less in such water, even for people young and physically fit.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Thus, the end of the Titanic but not the end of her story.

The Cat vs. The Dog

At Awakenings today we are celebrating Li’l Woofer Day,
aka National Puppy Day!

Puppy_FaceEven though catnip leans toward the cat, of course, whether a cat lover or dog lover, who could not love that face! Dogs have been labeled ‘man’s best friend’ but that is a matter of opinion. Whether teeny, tiny or great big overgrown sweeties, they do know when they are loved. We hug, they slobber!

So, on ‘Woofer Day’ here is a bit of trivia, Dog vs. Cat: [Dog is first only because today is his/her day!]

  • Dog people are 30 percent more likely to live in a rural area.

  • Cat people are 29 percent move likely to live in an urban area.

Animal rescue leanings

  • Cat people are 11 percent more likely to have contacts in both their cellphone and a physical address book.

Children

  • Dog people are 24 percent more likely to have kids.

  • Cat people are 33 percent more likely to prefer taking care of a friend’s kids than a friend’s dogs.

Favorite Beatle (NOT Beagle)?

  • Dog people are 18 percent more likely to consider Paul McCartney their favorite Beatle.

  • Cat people are 25 percent more likely to consider George Harrison their favorite Beatle.

Awakenings: Awkward Moments

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Have you ever found yourself in a totally awkward, meaning AWKWARD!, moment—that moment when ‘you wished you could wish‘ yourself back in time?  Wiggle your nose and vanish to a new location, new place in time? Blink your eyes and the entire event simply disappear in a flash? Such moments happen all the time usually when completely unexpected to some folks, of course, more than others.

Today you get to celebrate all of those moments you once wished at the time the ground would simply open up and swallow them to oblivion. Why? Because…

Today is…National Awkward Moments Day

Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Dare to share? There IS a comment section! What is your most awkward moment?

For me, it has to be when I was still a classroom teacher. It was on a day, of course, when the Assistant Principal entered my room for an unannounced observation. He quietly took a seat and almost fell out of the chair when I calmly instructed the students to take out their ‘workshits!’ OOPS! I meant to say worksheets! AW-w-w-wKWARD!

Awakenings: Maine: Beacons by the Sea

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

This Day in History: March 15, 1820

Maine (the Pine Tree State, also commonly known as the Lighthouse State) became the 23rd state on this day as part of the Missouri Compromise. This geographically limited the spread of slavery and enabled the admission to statehood of Missouri the following year, keeping a balance between slave and free states. The state motto of Maine is Dirigo (Latin for “I Direct” or “I Lead”).

~~~
Lighthouses, sea coastal living and lobsters are the most common associations with Maine.
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Maine is one of few states that has a designated cat. Every heard of the Maine Coon Cat? Check it out @Awakenings!
Awakenings: Barbie’s Debut
See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond
Today in History, March 9, 1959
Today is one of the few days of celebration to which a reason for this particular day actually exists. This Day in History, March 9, 1959, is the date when an 11-inch doll with a waterfall of blond hair made her debut, her name…Barbie!
Do you know Barbie’s REAL story? Have you ever seen the real-life Ken and Barbie who by the way actually do NOT like each other?
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Barbie has become a global icon of many faces with some body changes throughout her career. She has even acquired different cultural identities. Barbie remains, however, a fashion doll, unlike her predecessors, the baby dolls.
With all the chocolate and nutty days already celebrated, what is one more? Right? Dieting went to pot during Thanksgiving and Christmas now the push for chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate is making weight watching almost an impossibility.
