The Witching Hours

by Micki Peluso,

Author of “And the Whippoorwill Sang

The Witching Hours is a story of the origins of Halloween from olden times up to the present.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks!
-Shakespeare

Happy Halloween, my pretties!

Awakenings: Defining Moments

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Defining Moments

Within Awakenings from Then ’til Now is reference to many defining moments embedded in America’s history. Of course, to list all such moments in one volume is virtually impossible. Here are but a few with reflections from Awakenings poetry:

Embrace the Past . . .

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

In order to enrich the future of America, isn’t it going to be important to ensure a productive future for our youth? After all, the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow! But, how can today’s fledglings gain the experience they need in a jobless market where even their parents cannot find work? Perhaps we as a nation should establish our own defining moment which will once again return America to her roots of growth and prosperity.

Awakenings: Yippee Ki-yay, aka Yippee Yi Yo Kayah

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

There is just nothing like the good ol’ Westerns! Not only did you get to watch the Saturday afternoon movie matinee but afterward you got to go home and play the part until dark. The horses were Dad’s saw horses out back in his workshop and the six-shooters were perfectly formed broken pecan tree branches. A single ground-sweeping branch from the Weeping Willow served as the snapping whip as sounds of yippee ki-yay echoed through the entire neighborhood. Of course, it was more like repeated ‘yippees’ but I am sure you get the picture.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Did cowboys really use this expression? A good question. What do you think?

Awakenings: Torn with Time

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

As you travel along life’s highway, what enters your mind when you pass decaying billboards, faded, peeling, or etched with graffiti? What is your first gut reaction? Do you view them as merely nothing more than an eyesore, dirty, ragged and ugly? Do you turn the other way, possibly start a conversation and leave each behind without the slightest thought?

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Today, Awakenings plants a seed and challenges you to see it grow — grow from something torn with time into something inspirational. Next time you pass a decaying billboard take time to consider it differently, embrace the past, empower the present and enrich the future.

Awakenings: Word of the Day: Bacon

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

I love trivia! Do you? And what better subject than BACON! Perhaps all you know about bacon is that it is a meat product prepared from a pig and it goes with just about anything! We will get to some bacony combinations (usual and unusual) later but right now let’s take a walk down history lane and when, where, how this succulent meat found its way to the table, especially America’s breakfast table.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

What is your favorite bacon dish? Share your thoughts as comments @ Awakenings! I would love to hear from you 🙂

Free Write Friday #28: Pick a Title

free-write-friday-kellie-elmoreYes, I know today is NOT Friday. It is Tuesday. So-o-o-o, since Friday and the weekend were not conducive to writing I declare today a Friday Tuesday [or is that a Tuesday Friday?]. In either event, when I finally filtered through my massive email and read Kellie’s latest challenge, my mind was immediately fired up!

From Kellie: Here is your FWF prompt…

Select a title from the list below as your inspiration:

“Dandelion Season”
“Phone Call at Midnight”
“The Green Years”
“The Human Zoo”
“The Fires of Spring”
“The Ivy Covered Gate”

Here’s to you, Kellie, my contribution, which was inspired through your challenge regardless of the day or hour. I do hope you will accept in spite of the lateness:

“The Fires of Spring”

Butterfly of the Day for the 2nd of October 2012 from Rockey & Dee, on Flickr

Awakening from Winter’s sleep
Mother Nature bursts forth in song
Calling out her intense colors
Bidding ashen days so long

Buds and blossoms explode
In vibrant shades of rainbow hues
Igniting senses of emotion
From white-hot to passionate blues

Atala butterflies emerge
Hovering amid soul-scorching bliss
Flitting moment to moment
Donning petals a velvety kiss

Creatures of the earth
Fervently greet balmy ground
Fire in their hearts
Tempers as passions abound

Fiery sunrises, flaming sunsets
Mirror warm hues of wood fires
Bright oranges, blazing reds
Unleash Spring’s burning desires

“I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration
Of green fires lit on the soil of the earth, this blaze
Of growing, and sparks that puff in wild gyration,
Faces of people streaming across my gaze.”
–  D. H. Lawrence, The Enkindled Spring

Amazing Grace

There are probably very few people that are not familiar with the song Amazing Grace. It has been sung by countless choirs, recorded by numerous artists in multiple languages, enjoyed by young and old, and dubbed the most popular song on earth.

After listening to this awesome rendition of Amazing Grace, venture over to Awakenings, catnipoflife‘s sister site for a bit of history behind this remarkable song. If you are seeking a good movie for this Sunday afternoon, check out The Amazing Grace @Awakenings.

Awakenings: National Ice Cream Soda Day

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

It’s (maybe, maybe not) National Ice Cream Soda Day! In either event, take the time to enjoy this frothy drink, comprised of a few scoops of ice cream in any carbonated beverage. It’s the perfect thing to cool you off on this July day.

Visit Awakenings for clarification on this questionable matter – today or not today? That is the question.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Do you remember the old-fashioned ice cream soda fountain and know why the fountain attendant was called a soda ‘jerk’?
