Awakenings: The music goes on…Ragging into the 1910s

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

With the seeds of ragtime, jazz, blues, and spirituals having taken root, let’s enter the 1910s with the continuance of the syncopated highly energetic beat of the piano music known as Ragtime. What a strange word with the sound of the word itself initiating toe-tapping where many of the notes are actually not on the beat.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Can you sense it? Visualize fingers dancing across the black and ivory keys with such a rhythmic beat your whole body feels energized!

This Day in History: November 22, 1963

“The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it.

And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender,

or submission.” ~John F. Kennedy

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

“Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.”  ―John F. Kennedy

Awakenings: The music goes on…Leisure Times

The music goes on…Leisure Times

Having visited Music Through the Centuries 1600s to the 1800s, let’s continue into the 20th century…

Each and every part of the world embraces the happenings of the past…it is who we are and why we are here. There are many factors defining exactly who we are but one that is at the top of the list is music, which within itself has been defined and redefined throughout the ages. Each period of time carries its own music of the century but there is one century whose music underwent radical changes decade by decade. So, here we go into the 20th century where we will visit one decade at a time. . .

First Decade: 1900-1909

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Go to Awakenings and listen to Crossroads sing the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet’s version of the barbershop classic Sweet Adaline; a memorable Vaudeville song, She’s Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage; and Maple leaf Rag, recorded on Pianola Roll actually played by Scott Joplin.

Awakenings: Music Through the Centuries

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Music. FaLaLa…TraLaLa Boom De Ay…Boom Boom ShaBoom…NaNa-Nana-NaNa…everything before and after, as well as everything in between. Where would we be without music? Can you imagine a world without melody? Even the sounds of nature carry musical tones. Where there is sound there is rhythm from the clanging cogs of wheels definitely not ‘in pitch’ to Brahms’s Lullaby so relaxing one could sleep in a ditch. It keeps the sane man sane and lifts up the insane.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

And the music goes on beating to the rhythm of the changing times. . .

Awakenings: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night…”

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Within an age of advancing technology, there are a plethora of ways to communicate and conduct transactions. Does that mean the days of the United States Postal Service (USPS), a cherished American institution, might be numbered? While the Internet may be convenient, its functionality is dependent upon the mood of the cyber ghost on any given day.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Do we really want it to come to the point where children question what’s a postman?

Awakenings: Traditions with Papa!

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Chester Clyde Lee
November 12, 1916 – July 17, 1997

Yesterday we celebrated Veterans Day. Today, I continue that celebration with the birthday of my dad. Had he lived he would be 97 years old. He served in the Navy during WWII. He never talked about the war. It’s memories were private for him as is with so many of our veterans. The only tangibles I remember from his service were his uniforms, medals, and insignias. He kept them stored neatly away until right before he died. Mother told me one day very suddenly he gathered all that he had from his Navy days, walked into the backyard and set them ablaze. I suppose this was his way of finally letting go. It was only a short time later he went to bed one night and slipped into the final sleep.

God bless you, Papa. May you rest in peace!

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Observe the past, present and future of freedom in America! It is slowly being stripped away one tradition at a time!

Awakenings: Salute Our Veterans

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

A very special day is rapidly approaching, that day being Veterans Day. Whilst most people know Monday, November 11 will be celebrated as a national holiday, how many possess shallow minded knowledge limited only to the free meals, discounts, deals and sales offered on that day? How many truly know the historical significance behind Veterans Day?
