Inspiration: Red Wigglers?

[After reading this post, be sure to go to . . .echoes of the past. . . and read the poem
papa, mr. catfish and me!

Oh, I can just hear you now! WORMS! UGH! You shiver and squimishly shy away! But, WAIT! Don’t be in such a rush; there is actually a good reflection going on here. I do believe the reason this hit me last night is because throughout the entire day yesterday, my dad was heavy on my mind.

What a great man! He loved the out of doors and was his happiest either fishing on Lake Seminole or playing golf. He was also an avid hunter but that seemed to be put aside as he approached his senior senior years. How I loved the times he would take me fishing! The day before we would go digging for worms and set out early the next morning for the lake with his fishing boat in tow. No fancy rods and reels, just simple cane poles and the red wigglers for bait. He let me know right away he would not be baiting the hook for me. No, sir! He said he would have enough to do to keep his own pole baited and in the water.

There are no pictures of us in the family album but this is a very good replica of Daddy’s fishing boat. Could not find a photo of Daddy/daughter fishing!

Once on the water we road around and in a short while stopped at one of Daddy’s favorite fishing ‘holes’. With poles in hand, the first task at hand was baiting the hooks. I would shut my eyes and hesitantly dip my hand in the bucket coming out with a handful of squishy, wiggly worms. I would just look at them twisting and turning trying to crawl out of my hand in search of good ol’ Mother Earth. I would look over at Daddy silently hoping he would say, “OK, little girl, let me take care of that for you.” But, silence prevailed as he carefully tended to his own hook. I knew he was watching me out of the corner of his eye. Even his pipe could not hide the sly grin.

I carefully selected the prize worm and put the others back in the bucket to await their fate at a later time. Mother had already taught me how to sew so I decided I would just pretend I was threading a needle. [Not a very good analogy, I know.] Anyway, with the wiggly, swiggly worm between my fingers, I held my breath and voila managed to get it hooked without losing my breakfast. Whew!

Alas, with that done, I took a deep breath, sighed, smiled at my dad, and said, “At least the worst is over.” Oh, was I in for a surprise! With a flip of the line, the little worm hit the water, “Splash!” Dad and I sat in his fishing boat what seemed like forever but was probably no more than ten, maybe fifteen minutes. He glanced my way, asked if I was hungry and I said I would pass for the time being. After handling the worms, thoughts of eating just did not seem very appealing. Another ten, maybe fifteen minutes passed.

I squirmed, shifted in my seat, yawned (we hit the lake at dawn) and tried not to seem too bored or impatient. After all, I was nine years old and a girl for heaven’s sake. I should be home with Mother in the kitchen or playing with my baby dolls. Right? No way! I was like my dad and absolutely loved the outdoors. We both had looked forward to this day.

Of course, you know mine was no where near this big but to me it was the biggest catfish in the lake!

Then, it happened! It started with a slight tug on the end of the line. The tiny cork began to bobble up and down in the water, disappear and reappear within a matter of seconds. Daddy laid his pole aside and gently put his arm across my shoulder. The pole began to bend and I just knew it was going to break as it curved into a half moon. With a quick jerk, Daddy set the hook and helped me bring in the grandest catfish I had ever seen! I squealed with smiles and giggles as most girls do and wanted to jump up and down but remembered we were in the boat. That would have to wait until we were ashore. I was so excited but all I could do was simply stare at this huge fish with a half-eaten worm dangling from its mouth who appeared to be staring right back at me.

Oh, do you remember a little while ago my mentioning I was in for a surprise when I thought the worse was over? Have you figured that out yet? Yep, the next step was getting the fish OFF the hook. Of course, Daddy would not let me do that by myself since I was a novice and he did not want me to get finned. But I was required to watch diligently so I could learn the perfect technique for later fishing trips. With that task out of the way, we continued fishing for awhile, catching a few more catfish, and decided to end the trip with a ride around the lake.

After a few hours, we returned to shore, Daddy loaded the boat on the trailer and we headed for home. We talked about the fishing trip and how there would be more times like this one. I could not wait to get home and tell Mama about MY fish. That would come later, much later, for little did I know at the time that first the fish had to be CLEANED!

Messages in the Wind. . .

“Simple messages are potent. Stay tuned in. . .” ~catnipoflife

Gentle whispers of the wind
Echo of days gone by
Unveiling nostalgic thoughts
Within a windswept sigh

Walking along the seashore
Sunbeams radiate warmth
Soaking into the bare skin
Any day, any month

Strands of tousled hair
Crisscross about the face
Swirling, twirling wisps
Completely out of place

A sudden short burst of wind
Forces a swift brush of the hand
Providing view of a sea gull
Standing proudly upon the sand

First there’s only one in sight
Then, out of the blue more and more
Massing along the shoreline
As they’ve done many times before

Assembling in loose flocks
Together as companion and friend
Side-by-side they stand
Decoding messages in the wind

Gentle breezes, whirling gusts
Boast of a whisper-quiet hue
Don’t miss a single moment
What does the wind say to you?

Spirit of the Ladybug

Whether you call them ladybugs, ladybirds, or lady beetles, what is it about this ‘bug’ that so lovingly captures our attention? After all, it is an insect! Oh, my, yes, but what an adorable little insect that can lovingly tickle the palm of our hand or lightly rest on your arm! Let’s take a closer look at this phenomenal tiny creature and its impact on life.

Did you know this tiny beetle is an emblem of good luck, links to spiritual ideals and carries a powerful message? With its tiny, short legs, transparent wings and brightly colored black, yellow or reddish markings, the ladybug fascinates us with her delicate and loving nature.

LADYBUGS

A Ladybug’s appearance often signals new happiness and a renewed sense of well being, worries will fade and higher goals will be attained. Some say if you count the spots on a ladybug they correspond with the number of wishes and gifts that will come to you in the future but take warning, hurt a ladybug and the spots show how many misfortunes await you. Ladybugs remind us there will always be opportunities to pursue and capture our dreams.

INSPIRATION

Inspiration for this post came in an email notification from Inspiration Import ~ Art & Words – Spirit & Soul – Create & Creations. What messages have you received from the ladybug? What stories do you have to share about the ladybug and how she touched your life?

We Share the Same Dreams

There is a question that to this day still perplexes me: Why not make any day a Valentine’s Day? Is it just the cards, flowers and gifts on this one day that make the heart truly sing? I don’t think so!

Think about it. Each day begins with a sunrise and ends with a sunset. There are dawnings and there are twilights each flaunting spectacular colors equal to the challenge of any prism. From delicate to blazing, butterscotch to psychedelic hues, watercolor pallets emerge in a burst that fathoms beyond all imagination. Showers of gold outline sunsets of pink and echo angelic views across vast landscapes and open seas. As we rise each morning and retire each evening, the angels dance across both clear and cloudy skies leaving footprints of illusion. These are perfect times as nature’s paintbrush wisps through the clouds, over the horizon and across the seas. Can you see it?

Um-m-m-m? But what about the between hours? Are they not equally as poignant?

Vibrant blue morning glories gradually shifting to natural shades of purple enhance the splendors of the day— subtle, delicate, perfectly balanced. From the low, warm light of mornings and late afternoons to the mystics of the night time, all around us nature awakens, ever emerging, ever changing. Do you feel it?

Lights, sound, action! What a magnificent, anything but silent, motion picture right before our eyes—rumbles of distant thunder announcing a Springtime shower, the roaring of the ocean along the beach in Summer, the rustle of leaves in Autumn, the crunching of footfalls in the dry snow of Winter! Can you hear it?

The smell of rain along a dusty road, salty sea spray to raw ocean smells, smell of bayberry and cinnamon, and the burning smell of a cozy open fire invite all to lift their noses and take a deep breath. Do you smell it?

Delight comes with candlelit dinners for two, double straws in a single vanilla float, cuisines of festivals with every crumb taste tested, gripping taste of hot cocoa around a blazing campfire and so much more. Can you taste it?

Love is sharing whether by sight, feel, sound, smell or taste. Share with the one you love that in love, We Share the Same Dreams. . .

Inspiration. . .

Isn’t it amazing where we sometimes get our inspiration for writing? It may come in a dream, a vision,  a conversation or as simple as looking out one’s back door. Ah-h-h-h! The wonders of nature never cease. This morning didn’t begin much differently than any other day: morning shower with pretence I was standing in the rain and of course, that was after my favorite aromatic, acidic brew – coffee! By the way, if you did not visit catnipoflife’s sister site Awakenings yesterday, check out the posting Calling all Coffee Lovers .

Oops! Derailed – let me get back on track. Once I am relatively awake enough, I let my fingers do the walking onward and outward across the Internet. Now, that is a trip all its own with the ever present cyber ghost lurking in the background just waiting to announce his ghastly presence.  This morning the ‘ghost’ let me be and I managed to glide effortlessly along with little to no interference:) The sites were easy to find since I began with my connections and discussions on LinkedIn. That brings me to the topic at hand. . .

I was led to Bonnie Gail Carter and her poetry That’s Life, which is very reflective of catnipoflife. Her writings touch the heart from emotions of experience, rather than mere words on a page. I was touched by her poem Wind Song, which incited me to revisit one of my previous writings, Riding in the Wind.

What inspires you to write? Take a ride in the wind and become involved in the ever present catnip of life – observe life at its best, listen to life’s songs, embrace life’s bounties, breathe the breath of life and savor life to its fullest! If that does’t inspire you, what will?

Angels in the Snow

Today I read some beautiful poems from MaryHelen Ferris @ Greatpoetrymhf’s Weblog.
I was inspired and reflected back on some of my catnipoflife writings.

Wintry days have their own unique manner of finding a way to warm the heart. Angels in the Snow definitely finds a place among MaryHelen’s heart rendering verses. If you do not live in snow country, then your angels could be Angels in the Field, Angels in the Sand or simply use your imagination.

Click the picture and hope you enjoy. . .

Couldn’t sleep……

Couldn’t sleep. . .’rain pounding’ sounded like my husband in the backyard hitting golf balls onto the roof, ‘lightening flashes’ appeared as spotlights exploding under extreme heat, ‘thunder roaring’ reminded me of our son learning to play the drums! Ah-h, the memories, how sweet they are! So, as I pondered such recollections of times past, I smiled to myself and whispered to my cat, Bootsie, “Let’s just go ahead and get up?” Of course, she yawned and stretched; then, gave me that cat look which indicated she did not want to be disturbed:)

Coffee was brewed in no time at all. A quick splash of water on my face revealed tired eyes from the lack of sleep but the day needed to go on. I donned my favorite robe (you know the kind that has all the knobby nodules but you just can’t seem to part with it) and ventured out onto the back porch. Not long afterward my husband joined me and we both listened to the rain as it ricocheted off the tin roof. What a great sound even during the wee hours of the morning!

Then, whoosh! As quick as it arrived, the rain decided it had stayed long enough and ventured forth toward a different destination. Hints of blue begin to peep around the clouds still floating aimlessly along looking like huge puffs of cotton candy. You know, the kind we use to gaze upon as a child and ponder what animal or caricature they represented in our brilliant imaginative minds! You haven’t been there? Well, you just need to give it a try on the next cloudy day!

Anyway, here comes the really funny part. With the steam rising from our coffee cups and smiling at each other between sips, all of a sudden, my husband looks up and says, “That cloud looks like a platypus!” I almost fell out of my chair! For at that same instant, I had glanced up from my cup and what did I see? None other than Mickey Mouse! Oh, dear, I do hope we were not looking at the same cloud.

Time for you to take a break and see what kind of clouds are waiting for you outside (of course, if you have not already). Before you go, click the links Cotton Candy Clouds and Smell the Rain. . .
