Awakenings: Happy Father’s Day!

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Sunday, June 15, 2014 is Father’s Day…a day of honor and celebration for our dads and fathers. Not all fathers are dads nor are all dads fathers. Each holds a special place in a child’s, teen’s or adult’s heart. Regardless of the role—dad, father or both—not any one of us could be here without having been fathered. With fatherhood comes a tremendous responsibility encompassing tasks of sharing, caring and preparing for life’s journey.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

May this Father’s Day be filled with wondrous blessings that continue through each day of the year! To each of you…A Father’s Day Salute!

See with pictures on awakenings2012.blogspot.com

A father’s day is every day
Not just one day of the year
Holding a wee little hand
(day time and nighttime)
Wiping away a tear
*****
It’s faith, hope, love
All rolled into one
Encouragement, patience
(never giving up)
‘Til a task is done
*****
It’s being thankful
Gratitude of heart
Knowing what you need
(when you need it)
Right from the start
*****
It’s together time
The thrill of hearty laughter
Seeing what you’re going through
(even if it doesn’t show)
The morning of the day after

*****
It’s helping with decisions
Staying taut through outs or ins
Teaching life’s not easy
(taking the right road)
Supporting losses and wins
*****
It’s hurting and being hurt
Holding discipline’s place
Leaving behind a legacy
(not of material ‘things’)
Rewards of saving grace
*****

It’s compassion and comfort
When a hug is all that’s needed
Priceless moments in time

(Teddy Bear hugs)
Quickly and tenderly heeded
*****
It’s shaping, molding
Each life that has begun
Making an investment
(often without return)
‘Til the full course is run
*****
It’s when having to leave
Looking back with pride
Releasing all the tears
(happiness and heartache)
Bottled up inside

Adopt-A-Cat Month

June is Summertime!  There are a lot of celebrations during the month of June but one most fitting to catnip is Adopt a Cat Month. With summer comes the rising temperatures and efforts being made to cool things down. Have you ever thought about our feline friends who don a fur coat all year long? The sweltering summer heat can indeed be a torment.

adopt-a-cat-month1Adopt a Cat Month is HERE!

blockquote_iconWhy is Adopt A Cat Month in June? During the spring, shelters are brimming with cats and kittens of every age. Unfortunately, there are often more cats in a given shelter than they can handle.

This overpopulation causes millions of perfectly healthy, loveable and adoptable kittens and cats to be euthanized every year.

Even though June is designated as Adopt a Cat Month, it is not just about the cat. June is loaded with Pet Celebrations:

  • Adopt-a-Cat Month®. From the American Humane Association.AdoptAShelterCatMonth
  • Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month. From the ASPCA.
  • National Pet Preparedness Month. This month, timed for the first month of hurricane season, urges people with pets to make preparations in case they should be hit by a disaster…and that includes making plans for what you would do with your dog in case of a hurricane, tornado, flood or other natural disaster.
  • June 4, 2013: Hug Your Cat Day.
  • 1st week in June. Pet Appreciation Week.
  • June 10, 2013: World Pet Memorial Day.
  • mid-June: Animal Rights Awareness Week.
  • June 21, 2013: Take Your Dog to Work Day.
  • June 21, 2013: National Dog Party Day.

Ready? Set! Adopt a cat!

If you missed any of the links at the beginning of the post, click HERE for MORE CELEBRATIONS in the month of June!

Awakenings: Lucky Penny

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

How many times have you found a penny only to check if it is ‘heads up’ before picking it up? If so, that must mean you are superstitious. Superstition has it that you should only pick up a penny that is lying face up. The others…leave them where they lie. I disagree as will be noted later. First, let’s take a look at the day’s celebration.

Today is…

Lucky Penny Day

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Next time you find a penny, heads up or not, remember our nation’s motto! If you feel you do not need the penny, place it in the hand of another, repeat the motto, “In God We Trust” and say “pass it on.”

Hug Your Cat Day

Awakenings, catnip’s sister site, posts What’s Happenin’ on a fairly regular basis. Included are funny days, weird celebrations, wacky holidays and lots of food & chocolate. Often some appear that are actually ordinary and serve as a reminder. Since catnip is such a lover of our feline, fur-r-ry friend the cat it is only fitting to recognize here that today is…

Hug Your Cat Day

If you don’t own a cat, Hug Someone Else’s Cat! (Some celebrate Hug Your Cat Day on June 4th. Feel free to celebrate both.)

Sam-SuperkittyIn honor of Hug Your Cat Day, I would like to introduce you to Marion Lovato and her first published book, Sam, the Superkitty. Sam, aka Sammy, is the ‘superhero’ in the tale of a brave cat who is able to overcome obstacles and secure confidence in himself, and in others, by crusading as his alter ego, Sam, The Superkitty.

In the face of the many perils that go bump in the night, Sam, The Superkitty, proves himself a courageous force to be reckoned with. But, he must never let his family know that he is truly a superhero…

Meet the author…Marion-Lovato

After retiring from the fifth largest school district in the country, Marion Lovato decided to try her hand at writing children’s books. Sam, The Superkitty is the first in a series based on her youngest cat, Sammy. Combining some of his antics with her imagination, Marion has produced a book for all ages.  (Reading level is third grade.) She hopes to have the next book in the series out next year. You can visit Marion at her blog, Cats Rule.

Awakenings: Awkward Moments

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Have you ever found yourself in a totally awkward, meaning AWKWARD!, moment—that moment when ‘you wished you could wish‘ yourself back in time?  Wiggle your nose and vanish to a new location, new place in time? Blink your eyes and the entire event simply disappear in a flash? Such moments happen all the time usually when completely unexpected to some folks, of course, more than others.

Today you get to celebrate all of those moments you once wished at the time the ground would simply open up and swallow them to oblivion. Why? Because…

Today is…National Awkward Moments Day

Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Dare to share? There IS a comment section! What is your most awkward moment?

For me, it has to be when I was still a classroom teacher. It was on a day, of course, when the Assistant Principal entered my room for an unannounced observation. He quietly took a seat and almost fell out of the chair when I calmly instructed the students to take out their ‘workshits!’ OOPS! I meant to say worksheets! AW-w-w-wKWARD!

Awakenings: Barbie’s Debut

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Today in History, March 9, 1959

Today is one of the few days of celebration to which a reason for this particular day actually exists. This Day in History, March 9, 1959, is the date when an 11-inch doll with a waterfall of blond hair made her debut, her name…Barbie!

Do you know Barbie’s REAL story? Have you ever seen the real-life Ken and Barbie who by the way actually do NOT like each other?

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Barbie has become a global icon of many faces with some body changes throughout her career. She has even acquired different cultural identities. Barbie remains, however, a fashion doll, unlike her predecessors, the baby dolls.
