Jeannette Anderson, writer/blogger, posted a marvelous video today on Google+. Upon watching the video there was no doubt it should be aired on Awakenings. Tomorrow is Memorial Day but first, it is important to understand Memorial Day vs. Veterans’ Day.
“Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty…”
Airplanes, trains, buses, cars, yachts and RVs will be reelin’, rockin’ and rollin’ toward sunny beaches, campgrounds and other getaway destinations this coming weekend. But, WHY? The fact is the very mention of Memorial Day brings to mind Memorial Day weekend: the celebratory weekend marking the beginning of the busy summer season. For some, it is better representative of the ending of yet another school year. For many, it is a long weekend with an extra day off from daily work routines.
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Memorial Day Sale! Sale! Sale! It isn’t a bad thing to take advantage of the sales, especially taking into consideration our nation’s economy. However, should you take that advantage at any time during this weekend or on Monday be sure to notice whether an American flag is flying or if a sign is displayed in the window in honor and respect of our fallen soldiers. If one is not visible, I challenge you to ask WHY not?
So much history to celebrate on this day but at the top of the list is V-E Day: the final defeat of the Nazi war machine! German troops throughout Europe finally laid down their arms.
Visit AWAKENINGS…Embrace the Past, Empower the Present, Enrich the Future of AMERICA!
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Keep the memory alive of all who fought and sacrificed to maintain America’s freedom! Support America’s veterans! Only a few surviving veterans have a crystal clear memory of the moments…sights, sounds, smells…of WWII. Let NOT their sacrifices ever be forgotten.
“There is still something remarkable about these old soldiers — the warriors who humbly and bravely saved the world.” ~ABC News Dean Reynolds, World News Tonight, May 9, 2005
Which word best describes a teacher? ALL of the above!
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Teacher Appreciation Week 2013 began on Monday, May 6 with today,Tuesday, May 7 being NATIONAL TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY 2013!
Why should teacher appreciation be celebrated only one week out of the year? Why should it ever end? Teacher appreciation should span the time from the first day of school preparation to the first day of summer vacation!
“When you see a teacher today, or any day for that matter, thank them for everything they do.” They don’t give up on your children so why shouldnt you support them!
I was immediately drawn to the title of a post by Alastair today since it was a pun on the Star Wars’ line ‘May the Force be with you!” I smiled and reflected for a moment on my encounter with the first Star Wars movie in 1977. Little was it known at the time that Star Wars would become a legend, an icon, practically a household word. The smiles on camera were just the beginning of a movie phenomenon!
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Who was/is your favorite Star Wars character and/or episode?
After being in the ER with my husband from 3AM to 5AM this morning, I find myself in rare form. Ever been so tired you become ‘punchy’? Everything you see, everything you say seems funny & you laugh at the silliest things almost to the point of hysteria like running on high from too much caffeine. That’s me today and would you believe it led to the conversation topic – chicken.
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
I know what you are thinking…why chicken? I say, Why not chicken? buck, buck,,,,, buck,,, buckAHHHH; brrk, brroock, broock, brk-ooock; bwwaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkk and bock, bock, bock, bock, bock, begowwwwk!
A classic of classics, like baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet…that’s the all-American diner! Often epitomized with an exterior of stainless steel, the diner is unique in its architecture. Then, of course, there is the interior: a casual atmosphere, a counter, stools and service area along a back wall.
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Embrace the past, empower the present, enrich the future of the all-American diner!
Awakenings honors our soldiers, past, present and future…without them, America would not be the America as we know it today. Next time you see a soldier, shake his/her hand and express how much you appreciate the services performed and sacrifices endured by each and every one. They are the life’s blood of American freedom!
Sharla Shults‘s insight:
Honor, respect and support the United States of America military!
