Awakenings: My America, YOUR America, Our America

catnipoflife‘s sister site: See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Are you an American? What does America mean to you? What is your interpretation of the phrases America the Beautiful, The Land of the Free, The Home of the Brave? These are not words to just be recited on a whim but instead they represent the heart of America.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Rediscover what made, and still makes, this nation great! There are many defining moments embedded throughout America’s history. Within today’s society, thoughts remain unsettled as America strives to uphold the liberty, freedom and the constitution upon which this nation was built. Be one of the Voices of America! Protect the freedoms won through faith, hope and courage amid unfathomable sacrifice!

Awakenings: 1 – Happy 4th of July

Awakenings: Happy 4th of July

The American flag: Wave it proudly!

An icon of American freedom, a symbol of liberty, a motif referring to the United States, a banner for independence––

all symbolize America and the principles upon which she stands. Small flags are displayed on holidays, i.e., Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Presidents’ Day, Flag Day, and of course, on today’s special day, Independence Day. American flags also proudly displayed beside war memorials and next to the graves of U.S. war veterans. They are flown at public buildings and it is not uncommon to find full-size flags flying in the yards of private homes.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

We live in America, we rejoice in America’s freedoms, and today we celebrate America’s independence!

Awakenings: 2 – Countdown to 4th of July

See on Scoop.itAwakenings: America & Beyond

Countdown: 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 to Happy 4th of July!

One day away from the Fourth of July celebration! Yep! It is tomorrow! As you continue to prepare for the festivities of Independence Day, keep in mind many of our service men and women are stationed on foreign shores where celebration may not be the topic of the hour. They are the defenders of our nation ensuring that the freedom obtained centuries ago remains in tact.

FEATURED VIDEO at Awakenings – Remember me! and MUSIC “For Freedom” by Avalon.

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Having a loved one deployed for lengthy periods of time is tough, but it’s especially hard during any holiday. While you might be reveling in backyard BBQs, listening to patriotic music and of course, enjoying the grand finale, fireworks, the day may not be so entertaining for everyone. For those defending our independence, the red, white and blue they carry on this day may only be in their hearts.

Awakenings: Honoring America’s Heroes

Gary Sinise Honors Veterans at National Memorial Day Concert

Jeannette Anderson, writer/blogger, posted a marvelous video today on Google+. Upon watching the video there was no doubt it should be aired on Awakenings. Tomorrow is Memorial Day but first, it is important to understand Memorial Day vs. Veterans’ Day.

blockquote_icon“Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty…”

Sharla Shults‘s insight:

Display the American flag proudly for our fallen heroes! That is the least one can do on Memorial Day!

World Press Freedom Day: May 3

The question of the day @Awakenings is

“What if you could

NOT

Think. Speak. Tweet. Like. Share. FREELY?”

FreedomofPress

Such freedoms are not enjoyed all over the world nor is exercising such freedom always safe.

Did you know in the past 10 years:

  • Only 1 in 10 cases of crimes against social media producers, journalists, and media workers has led to a conviction.

  • 600+ journalists, social media producers and media workers have been killed while reporting news to the general public.

Awakenings: America: Enchanting, Beautiful and Free

See on Scoop.itAmerica
The premise behind Awakenings is to reopen the eyes of Americans to the awareness of those who laid the foundation and established the platform for America’s freedom. It began over 400 years ago with the most significant landing in our nation’s founding: Jamestown, Virginia, 1607. This significant point in time did not occur without sacrifice: lives of individuals, entire families and loved ones. And, sacrifices are still being made today to maintain that which was established centuries ago.

Awakenings: Voice of America: Change?

See on Scoop.itAmerica

A critical tipping point for America is at our doorstep. Changes are about to be made, whether we are in agreement or not, they are inevitible. Election brings about major change: changes in government, changes in policy, changes that may or may not represent balance of power.

The Close of Day: 9/11/2012

As we close the 11th day of September, 2012, let us lift our eyes toward the night sky in humble prayer for the families and loved ones who suffered losses on this tragic day eleven years ago.

you will always be in our hearts
forever remembered, always loved
as memories remain vivid
among the stars in Heaven above

9/11 was a reminder that the bonds of family can be severed in an instant. They are essential, crucial, valuable, fragile.”
